The Creation of Cirque du Soleil

In the early 80s in a small town near Quebec City in Canada, townsfolk were shown a different world.

A group of characters, part of a theater street group, roamed the streets, striding on stilts, juggling, dancing, breathing fire and playing music. Gilles Ste-Croix founded the group.

Guy Laliberte, with the help of Gilles Ste-Croix and crew, dreamed up the idea of creating a Quebec circus and take the troupe traveling around the world. Cirque du Soleil was formed.

Van Andel Arena's Concourse Expansion to be Dedicated Before Saturday's Griffins Game

"Amway Section A,” the $1.2 million expansion of Van Andel Arena’s northwest concourse, will be dedicated and opened to the public prior to the game this Saturday, Nov. 20 between the Grand Rapids Griffins and Lake Erie Monsters at 7PM.

Following four months of construction, final touches are being made to this 3,500-square-foot addition, which was designed by Rossetti Architects, the arena’s original architects, and built by general contractor Rockford Construction and other local firms. Intended to help alleviate congestion during large arena events, Amway Section A will feature a full bar, concession-style food service and three 42” flat screen TVs.

A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony for Amway Section A will be held at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, 15 minutes after doors open. Madiol, Griffins president & CEO Dan DeVos, and SMG’s regional general manager for Van Andel Arena, Rich MacKeigan, will be among the dignitaries on hand to dedicate the addition and welcome its first patrons. The first 500 fans to visit Amway Section A will receive a free t-shirt, while 100 more shirts will be tossed to the crowd during the Griffins game.

“With the full support of the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority, we continually strive to make improvements that benefit our patrons,” said MacKeigan. “The expansion of the concourse will provide a more convenient and comfortable walkway for patrons and an additional area for concessions, while maintaining the look and feel of the facility’s original design.”

The naming rights for the concourse expansion are one element in a three-year sponsorship agreement between the Griffins and Amway, which also includes the placement of an Amway patch on the Griffins’ home and road jerseys and ad spots during the Griffins’ radio broadcasts on ESPN 96.1 FM.

“We have pursued Amway in the past with different sponsorship elements, but this year we really felt we had a package that perfectly met their corporate objectives,” said Tim Gortsema, the Griffins’ senior vice president of business operations. “The jersey patch is premium inventory that gives them broadness of reach in all the American Hockey League markets we visit, and having the Amway name connected to the home of the Griffins is a great match. I could not envision any other sponsor for this expansion.”

Amway is extremely active in sports sponsorships. They hold the naming rights of the Amway Center in Orlando, which is home to the NBA’s Orlando Magic, and are the presenting sponsor of Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes. Most recently, Amway’s North American affiliate announced they hold exclusive rights to placing their logo on the official Detroit Red Wings practice jersey as well as dasher board signage at Joe Louis Arena.

We need you to vote EVERYDAY! Email christine@kidsfoodbasket.org to sign up for daily reminders! If you sign up for the daily reminder and vote all 30 days, we'd like to say thank you with a Kids' Food Basket hoodie and some Pepsi products.

Kids' Food Basket attacks childhood hunger by providing 2,600 nutritious, fresh sack suppers to kids every day. Sack suppers fill a gap schools and parents often can't afford, in a way that's accessible to kids. They are distributed in classrooms to kids who receive breakfast and lunch through Federal programs. All of the school we serve have 80% or more of the student population receiving free or reduced lunches. (We are not federally funded; our revenue comes exclusively from community members, foundations, businesses, and corporations like Pepsi.) Without our meals, kids would only eat half of the 2,000 calories needed to grow.

A sack supper includes a serving each of fresh fruit and fresh vegetable, a sandwich, 100% fruit juice box and healthy snacks. Some of the vegetables our kids like include carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers. Fruits our kids eat might include bananas, apples, berries, or pears.

To make this vital need a refreshing reality for hungry kids in West Michigan, we need your vote. You can vote via text message by sending 101423 to 73774 AND online at refresheverything.com AND on Facebook through the Pepsi Refresh Application...One vote per method, per day

Thanks for your support, West Michigan!

Cirque du Soleil - Dralion is coming to Van Andel Arena!

Dralion is the fusion of ancient Chinese Circus tradition and the avant-garde approach of Cirque du Soleil. The show's name is drawn from its two main symbols: the dragon, representing the East, and the lion, representing the West. Dralion derives much of its inspiration from Eastern philosophy with its perpetual quest for harmony between humankind and nature. Suspended in time between the past and the future, Dralion is a celebration of life and the four elements that maintain the natural order: air, water, fire and earth. Innovation soars to new heights as it defies the laws of nature. Dralion is a dynamic performance that transcends the boundaries of the imagination and leads us into a dreamscape with a new and sparkling perspective.

Wisconsin Artist Wins Griffins' Jersey Design Contest

Ryan Muraro of Waukesha, Wisc., has been selected as the winner of the Grand Rapids Griffins’ second annual jersey design contest, conducted earlier this summer through PuckDrawn.com.

Muraro’s dramatic vision of a vigilant, muscular Griff was chosen from 97 entries, nearly double the number received during last summer’s inaugural contest. Pending some minor adjustments and the City of Grand Rapids’ approval of Muraro’s inclusion of its logo in the secondary logo/shoulder patches, his design will be submitted to the American Hockey League and Reebok for approval, then worn by the Griffins during their 14th annual New Year’s Eve game on Dec. 31, 2010. The jerseys will be auctioned to the public immediately after that game, with all proceeds benefiting the GVSU club roller hockey team.

“Once again, I was extremely impressed with the nearly 100 entries submitted to PuckDrawn.com,” said Rich Meyers, the Griffins’ director of game operations. “Choosing a top 10, let alone the eventual winner, was an extremely difficult task, one that I feel speaks volumes for the quality of the artists’ work.

“Like one of our winners (Chad B. Stilson) from last season, Ryan’s completely original design features an aggressive Griffins logo, yet he was able to keep the lines simple and capture the tradition of the game with use of the ties in the front of the jersey. And his creative integration of the city’s logo into an allusion to the famous ‘winged wheel’ put Muraro's design at the top. I'm looking forward to seeing this jersey come to life on Dec. 31, once we’ve converted Ryan from a Milwaukee Admirals fan to a Griffins fan,” Meyers added.

A 23-year-old industrial designer and illustrator with a degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Muraro already boasts an impressive portfolio, having previously designed suits for British speedskater Philip Brojaka as well as the Ukrainian national speedskating team.

“I wanted to make an accelerated evolution of the Griffins’ current look, making sure to keep the same sort of structure,” said Muraro. “For the jersey, I looked back to the jerseys the Griffins wore back when they began in the old IHL and wanted to emulate the feathered shoulders that were such a unique look. When I first saw them play the Admirals back then, I saw those jerseys and immediately identified them with the team, just as much as the logo itself.”

In recognition of his winning entry, Muraro will receive a customized jersey of his design and four tickets to the Dec. 31 game.
